About me

Thank you to those parents who voted in the 2016 and 2019 elections and included me in your choice of Board Members for Epsom Girls Grammar School.  I will consistently seek to work for greater participation, transparency and community engagement. I welcome any opportunity to meet with you to hear your views on school direction, governance and oversight.

On practical matters of school management and day-to-day school life I encourage you to follow the excellent procedures in place that can begin by contacting your daughter's year level Dean or Guidance staff.

Let me share some background...

My wife, Suzanne (a teacher) and I have three daughters:

Rebekah (Year 13 in 2015) is a swimmer (United Swimming Club), now on a scholarship and studying Biochemistry at Ohio State University.

Summer (Year 13 in 2018) is deeply involved in dance at Mt Eden Ballet Academy (MEBA) and is now working on contract teaching and performing.

Georgia (Year 11) is our budding tennis player (Campbell Park Tennis Club) and pianist.

All three girls enjoyed attending Cornwall Park District School during their primary years.

In the early 1990's I was employed as Special Projects Manager for Mt Roskill Grammar School under the leadership of Principal Colin Prentice and Board of Trustee's Chair, Ian Hay.  Working directly for the Board I had responsibilities for the funding and construction of an the artificial hockey turf facility, the marketing of the international students programme, support for the development of an early childhood centre, and for feasibility study work into both a performing arts centre and teachers training college.

I volunteered to contribute to the governance of a modern learning environment because I have skills and unique experience gained from professional involvement and contribution to the education sector. I own a business which creates communication materials and strategy for many schools locally, nationally and internationally. My company has provided EGGS with graphic and web design services.  Our recent Auckland clients have included Rangitoto College, Manurewa High School, Mt Roskill Grammar School, Howick College, Ponsonby Intermediate School, Glendowie School, Selwyn College, Somerville Intermediate, Bucklands Beach Intermediate, Mahurangi College and the family of Saint Kentigern schools.

It hasn't just been about getting into print or being online but about helping schools to present themselves and their visions with integrity to the communities they serve. I’ve presented at conferences in Australia, New Zealand and the United States on connecting schools with their communities, recruiting and retaining international students and on understanding school reputation. May 2016 saw me meeting personally with public high school superintendents, principals and teachers in Texas, upstate New York and New Hampshire. Our work there is threefold (i) to present and promote their schools locally and internationally, primarily using print and online materials, (ii) to implement administration systems and procedures to support the care of incoming international students, and (iii) to provide research and copywriting services to those working towards federal immigration law change applicable to US public high schools.

In 2018, as a recipient of a NZ School Trustees Association scholarship, I completed a Leadership Intensive in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins University on School and Community Engagement. This April has seen me visit 28 public high schools in Massachusetts and spend time with school boards, superintendents, principals and teachers, all at no cost to EGGS.
